چکیده

The convergence of the biodiversity and climate crises, widening wealth inequality, most recently COVID-19 pandemic underscore urgent need to mobilize change secure sustainable futures. Centres tropical are a major focus conservation efforts, delivered in predominantly site-level interventions often incorporating alternative-livelihood provision or poverty-alleviation components. Yet, on intervention is ill-equipped address disproportionate role (often distant) collapse. Further these approaches attempt ‘resolve’ local economic poverty order safeguard seemingly virtuous act, potentially overlooking communities as living locus solutions crisis. We offer Connected Conservation: dual-branched model that commands novel actions tackle distant wealth-related drivers decline, while enhancing empower stewards. synthesize diverse literatures outline for this shift practice. identify three dominant negative flows arising centres disproportionately undermine biodiversity, highlight key positive, though marginalized, enhance exist within biocultural centres. Conservation works amplify positive flows, diminish thereby orientates towards desired states with justice at centre. connected can be applied replicated telecoupled, reality collapse empowering contemporary approach calls extend its collaborations across sectors deliver transformative change.

Rethinking legal objectives for climate-adaptive conservation

This paper examines conservation objectives in Australian law in the context of climate change. The rate of climate change and the scale and extent of its impacts on natural systems drive the need to re-evaluate current conservation objectives, from basic concept definitions, to overarching goals and values, to the way they are operationalized at all levels. We outline the case for reform of ob...

Grasslands of the World: Diversity, Management and Conservation

Features provide a comprehensive global overview of extent and diversity of grasslands. Analyzes how humans shaped grasslands through millennia of use and which role they play in present-day agriculture. Quantifies the role of grasslands as biodiversity hotspots as well as the drivers threatening these. Evaluates the ecosystem services grasslands provide e.g. in terms of soil protection and car...

Rethinking Tropical Forest Conservation: Perils in Parks

Large, pristine, uninhabited parks are the defining criterion of success in conserving tropical forests, according to some conservationists. It is argued that human residents in tropical forests inevitably deplete populations of large animals through hunting, triggering a chain reaction of ecological events that greatly diminish the conservation value of these forests. Hence, the removal of peo...

Rethinking property rights: comparative analysis of conservation easements for wildlife conservation

Conservation easements (or conservation covenants) are commonly conceptualized as acquisitions of sticks in a ‘bundle of rights’ and are increasingly implemented for wildlife conservation on private lands. This research asks: (1) What are the possibilities and limitations of the conservation easement approach to wildlife conservation in contrasting rural and periurban regions? and (2) How does ...

Community-based conservation in a globalized world.

Communities have an important role to play in biodiversity conservation. However, community-based conservation as a panacea, like government-based conservation as a panacea, ignores the necessity of managing commons at multiple levels, with vertical and horizontal interplay among institutions. The study of conservation in a multilevel world can serve to inform an interdisciplinary science of co...
